Safety of patients receiving treatment in hospitals is a major concern. The probability of patients contracting Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) is extremely high. Hospitals across the country are falling prey to infections, losing their patients and more importantly their image in providing good health.
The threat of infections means a greater usage of higher quantity and strength of prophylaxis antibiotics which results in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), one of the major reasons of HAI.
Furthermore, chemical disinfectants currently used are proving to be ineffective in eliminating microbes, leading to biofilm formation and ultimately adding to cases of HAI.
All this results in the emergence of new super bugs, life threatening complications, 2-4 times increase in average length of stay (ALOS), high cost of treatment and even deaths.
Data reveals that despite all the efforts and measures taken, an incidence of HAI still prevails:
- Out of 55 million recorded deaths in the world, almost 1.4 million deaths are caused due to HAIs
- In India alone, approximate 25% of the patients admitted in hospitals and nursing homes acquire HAI
